How to rank number 1 on Google

So you have built a great website or blog and you have added great content but nobody is coming to your site. How come, you may say?

We explain it all below:

Rank number 1 on google

So how can you rank number 1 on google?

You see, to hit big traffic figures you need your site to be “viewable” for the keywords that are searched in Google and other search engines such as Bing. Let us start off by stating the whole process takes a lot of work and if you implement it the incorrect way, it can cause you some sleepless nights, therefore, we have added this helpful article to help advise you the best practices to be sitting at the top of the pile in the wonderful and sometimes stressful world of the search engines or serps if you are a online marketing geek.

Step 1 - Content for your website/Keywords

Assuming you have already created your blog or website interface, the first steps you should participate in, is some keyword research.

Content is needed to rank number 1 on Google

Depending on what your site is based on will depend on what kind of keywords you should be adding to your website.

Let’s say for example your website is going to be selling baby clothing, then you will look for keywords that you wish to target in your niche, such as “newborn girl dress” or “6-12 month old shoes”.

One of the most important factors when selecting your keywords has to be the amount of searches the keyword(s) have per month, and how difficult they are to rank in the search engines.

For those that don’t quite understand the concept, let us put it in a more simple way. If you are targeting a keyword such as “baby dresses” you will see that there are over 100,000 searches per month for that keyword, but crucially, the difficulty level for that particular keyword is extremely hard to rank as there are thousands of established sites that are already ranking for that keyword, therefore, unless you are an online marketing wizard, you will have literally no chance of reaching the top of Google for this keyword.

On the other side of the coin, we have other keywords that are extremely easy to rank, such as “buy laptop for my dog” , but as nobody is going to search for this longtail keyword, therefore, what is the point of sitting at the top of Google for this keyword if nobody will search and see it? We will tell you, no point whatsoever.

The best practices is to find the “Golden keywords” that have lots of searches per month, but crucially, are not that difficult to rank.

There are many different tools you can use, and as always, the best ones you will need to spend some money on. There are a few free tools out there and probably the best is Google Adwords, especially to find the monthly searches a particular keyword receives.

When you are looking for the “golden keywords” it is much easier to locate them for a “long tail keyword”. What this means in short - a one or two word length keyword becomes maybe five or six words, for example, let’s take keyword “baby dresses” as we already mentioned earlier, it is nigh impossible to rank this keyword to the top of the serps, but if you add “baby dress for 18 month old” you will see that is still receives plenty of searches, but it is much easier to rank as most of the websites selling kids clothes are not targeting this long tail keyword.

Once you have carefully selected your keywords via the process above, you then need to write unique, great quality content based around your newly located keywords.

Most online marketers agree that the more content you have the better. We would advise you adding at least 2000 words of content for each page you add to your site and once you have added it, you will have your rocket fuel to power your site up the search engines!

If you are not very good at writing the content for your site, you can always outsource it to a specialist writer that will create you awesome, thought engaging articles. A lot of people fall at the first hurdle as they choose the wrong keywords, and if you follow the process above, you should avoid making these mistakes.

On-page SEO

Ok, so you now have your website up and all your content and keywords added, so what is next to sit on the search engine throne?

On page SEO

This takes us to probably the most technical part of ranking to the top of Google.

There are many different attributes to include on your site to make it, not only searchable, but placed together like a well oiled machine. Below we have added the most important factors relating to your sites on-page SEO.

Content of your pages

We already mentioned above that your content is probably the biggest ranking factor. Always ensure that your content is worthy of Google ranking it, this means everything has to be well researched and engaging for the reader.

Each page of content you add needs to be linkable. Google loves links as they are easier ways to navigate somewhere else, that is more related to what the reader is looking for, whether it's linking to another page on your site, or even to a completely different website.

Great content that supplies the demand the reader is looking for, with clickable links to elsewhere, should be the focal point of any website that is serious about ranking to the summit of Google.

Supply the readers demand

Supplying your readers demand is another fantastic way to impress Google. Let’s say that your website is based around flying Drones, then a great way to enhance the reader's demand is to show a short YouTube video of that particular drone in action, or maybe add a Wikipedia link on the model of the aircraft.

You can add literally anything to your content, whether it is a picture, link or video. This will give the reader a better all round experience which will, in turn, help that page rank better in the search engines.

Title Tags

Title tags help your website’s pages “speak” to Google and advise what your content is about. This is critical for both the search engines and user experience. The keyword associated with your page is normally used in the title tag.

Most search engines like Google or Yahoo crawl the title tag to determine relevancy and link the person that typed in the search to the webpage that suits best.

Some webmasters use to place the keyword in the title tags 2 or even 3 times to get more “juice” but this is considered a big no these days as Google will take this as keyword stuffing and penalize you, therefore, add your keyword in the title tag just the once.

URL structure of your webpage

Your page’s URL structure should always be clean and relevant to your site structure. For example, a great URL should look like the below: - This shows the site structure and webpage in order of relevance. The first section is your website name, the second section is the page within your website. As you can see, the URL looks clean and easily readable. The below URL is incorrect in terms of being able to rank the page: - This URL doesn’t advise the search engines what the page is about, therefore, cannot rank it as well as a URL that has order and relevance. Always try to avoid URL’s that don’t make sense. If you cannot read them, neither can the search engines.

The ideal optimized webpage

The 4 main important factors for on-page SEO above, when implemented should help your page and site rank well in the search engines. Below are the best practices:

  • Content should be super relevant to the title tag
  • Include the keyword in the title tag
  • The page URL should be readable and also relevant
  • Add images and videos to your content
  • Add keyword a few times to your content
  • Create link backs to different pages on your site
  • Make link backs to the homepage - often done via the sites logo, and a Home menu selection.
  • Each page within your site should be easily accessible with 3 clicks

Off page SEO

Now we have the site up and running, and all the on-page SEO completed, you are now ready for some serious movement in the search engines.

Off page SEO

Having all the above mentioned implemented on your site has just laid the platform for the off-page SEO.

So, what is off-page SEO we hear you ask? Well, Off page SEO is everything you need to do to rank, away from your website. In other terms, it is used to tell the serps, including Google, what others in the cyber world think of your websites.

The first stage of off page SEO is backlinking back to your site and pages. If Google sees that others are linking back to your content, then it must be great content or at least value for the reader. Want to boost the ranking power of your domain? Click here to get high quality backlinks.

Have you ever shared anything or linked something on the social media sites that you thought was useless? Of course not. People only link and share information they think will be valuable to others, and backlinking for SEO purposes tell the search engines exactly what you are trying to tell others when sharing things in cyber world.

SEO is something that terrifies new online marketers and it can be nearly impossible if you haven’t the correct on-page seo, content and keywords. A lot of people think that off-page SEO is solely about backlinking, and that is only half the story.

Everything you do away from your site is considered as off-page SEO. Whether that be posting on a external blog, uploading your site videos on YouTube, or adding some pics on Pinterest, it is all classed as off-page SEO if you are trying to rank your site and its pages.

It is true that link building is the most important factor to rank to the summit of the serps, as the links are the mechanics that connect your site to search engine web crawlers. You can be super lucky and rank in the top 10 for a “golden keyword” that nobody else is trying to rank, but even then, the chances of reaching the top is very unlikely for a decent keyword with a fair amount of searches.
